Place: Little Vumbura is situated on a beautiful island in a private concession in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded as it is by water, and lying close to large rivers, it is accessible only by boat – the epitome of island living in the midst of the Delta. Water-based activities are a focus, with mekoro and boats plying the channels. Spectacularly diverse wildlife viewing and birding is consistently good all year round via game drives through the savannah areas, and guided nature walks around the islands.

Wildlife: The annually inundated grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding Little Vumbura are locally referred to as “melapo” and offer good seasonal viewing of elephants, giraffes, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebras, common waterbuck, reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe, and Cape buffalos. Hippos, and crocodiles are common in the waterways. Predators include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion; as well as leopard, cheetah, and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round.

Accommodation: Little Vumbura has six beautiful tented accommodations shaded by the canopy of an ancient forest, on an isolated island surrounded by the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta. Each well-appointed tent has en-suite facilities, and a deck with amazing views over the waving grasses of the surrounding floodplains. A plunge pool and reading area overlook the floodplains, while a star deck is reached by a bridge leading off the dining area. This traditional and intimate safari camp is only accessible by boat.

Purpose: Meaningful, long-term community engagement with the Okavango Community Trust (OCT) – representing local villages – which continues to innovate through contributions to improving lives and livelihoods in the region.

NOTE: Hot air ballooning excursion (weather permitting) is offered from mid-April 2022 to mid-September 2022, as well as start May 2023 to mid-September 2023.
