Place: Kulala Desert Lodge is situated at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei Dunes and is the closest location to Sossusvlei (via a private gate exclusive to Wilderness Safaris vehicles). Scenic nature drives and guided nature walks are available; guided electric powered fat-wheeled bike excursions (at extra cost on a DB1 rate basis, however, included on a FI rate basis – subject to availability on either rate basis) are a fun way to explore the spectacular open plains. A highlight is to experience the area on a hot air balloon safari (weather permitting and at extra cost).

Wildlife: Desert-adapted wildlife to be seen on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve includes ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyaena, and the occasional brown hyaena. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox, and aardwolf can be seen as well. One bird, the aptly named dune lark, has its entire global distribution limited to the area. A surprisingly diverse array of insects, reptiles, and rodents make their home around Kulala Desert Lodge. At dusk the call of barking geckoes can be heard, and guided nature walks may reveal the buck-spoor spider with its multi-entrance burrow or the ambush specialist antlion, to name but a few.

Accommodation: The rustic, comfortable lodge comprises twenty three thatched and canvas tents (including two family units), each built on a raised wooden platform, with a flat rooftop area for sleep-outs under the stars. The main area includes living and and dining areas, a pool and wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole. Striking are the antiquated tree trunks used as pillars at certain points – yet another element drawing you further into nature..

Purpose: Once farmland used for subsistence goat farming, the Kulala Wilderness Reserve had very little indigenous wildlife. In 1996 Wilderness stepped in to rehabilitate the area and today the land and its wildlife have returned to their former glorious natural state.

NOTE: Ballooning closed on 25 December and 01 January, and from mid-January to mid-February.
