Place: Situated on a secluded tree-island in the beautifully scenic Jao Flats area of the concession, Jacana is a true water camp. From here, the essence of an Okavango Delta adventure is experienced by floating along its clear, quiet channels in a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) or speed up slightly on a boating trip, viewing some of the fascinating creatures that flourish in this unique Delta environment. This includes the emblematic African jacana as it delicately steps from one waterlily to the next. Day game drives take place all year round. Share tales around the floating fire deck with a 220 degree view of the immense floodplains long into the star-filled night.

Wildlife: Jacana is set in the Jao Reserve, a true wetland area, which is ideal for the rare sitatunga, and abundant red lechwe. In the summer months when the inundation has receded, lechwe, tsessebe, and elephant are prevalent; while lion, and occasionally leopard, may be seen. Wildlife concentrations in this area of the Delta depend on water flow and volume, changing from season to season. A wealth of water birds can be seen; enthusiasts can spot Pel’s fishing-owl, African and lesser jacanas, as well as other ‘Okavango specials’ such as slaty egret, and African pygmy-goose.

Accommodation: Surrounded by seasonally inundated floodplains and papyrus swamps, Jacana is an intimate island experience with just five tents built on raised wooden decks to maximise the amazing views of the broad channels fronting the camp. The main area is set on double storey, elevated platforms nestled between magnificent sycamore trees, surrounded by dense wild date palms and an enormous canopy of mangosteens. The pool, raised bar area, jetty and floating fire deck, as well as the expansive viewing deck take in the quintessential true water camp experience of the Okavango Delta scenery.

Purpose: Jacana is dedicated to, and involved with, projects that support community upliftment – including hosting Children in the Wilderness (CITW) camps since 2002, as well as partnering with the Tubu Joint Management Committee and the Pack for a Purpose initiative.
